Developed in 1915 from a strain of Rhode Island Red brought into New Hampshire state, they were recognized as a distinct breed in 1935, (Sustainable Heritage Chicken Breed). New Hampshire breed originated from the “Newcomer” strain which was an egg laying strain that has been improved upon yearly on farm. If you wish for a bird that matures early, lays well and is of heavy weight, New Hampshire is what you’re looking for.
