Developed in 1915 from a strain of Rhode Island Red brought into New Hampshire state, they were recognized as a distinct breed in 1935, (Sustainable Heritage Chicken Breed). New Hampshire breed originated from the “Newcomer” strain which was an egg laying strain that has been improved upon yearly on farm.
